Important December dates for your financial plan

Published November 14, 2025

As the year comes to a close, December brings several key dates that may affect your financial planning. Whether you're making contributions, reviewing your portfolio, or preparing for the holidays, here are a few dates to keep in mind:

December 10 – Bank of Canada rate announcement

The final interest rate decision of the year may influence borrowing costs, savings rates, and market sentiment. It’s a good time to consider how rate changes could affect your financial strategy.

December 24 – Early market close

Markets will close at 1:00 p.m. ET on Christmas Eve. If you plan to make trades or speak with your advisor before the holidays, be sure to do so early.

December 25 & 26 – Market holidays

Markets will be closed for both Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Offices and trading platforms will not be available.

December 30 – Final trading day of 2025

This is the last day to execute trades for the calendar year. It’s especially relevant for tax-loss harvesting, portfolio rebalancing or realizing gains before year-end.

December 31 – Contribution cut-offs

While Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contributions for the 2025 tax year can be made until March 2, 2026, other accounts have earlier deadlines. For example, Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) contributions must be made by December 31 to qualify for the Canada Education Savings Grant for 2025.

Office closures and advisor availability

Edward Jones offices may have adjusted hours during the holiday season. Check with your financial advisor to confirm availability between December 24 and January 1.
