Before I recommend a financial strategy, I want to know your "why." If you want to retire by 60, I'll ask you why. Your answers and our discussion help us uncover the things – from the obvious to the subtle – that really matter to you. My work isn't about money for money's sake; it's about what you want your money to do for you. Knowing your why lets me do my best work finding the investments and solutions that will work hardest to deliver the life you envision.
I believe that people overestimate what they can achieve in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in a decade. A written financial strategy around your personal why sets optimistic but realistic expectations and tangible activities to help you stay on track throughout your life. It allows you to consider priorities and trade-offs. It favors long-term focus over impulsivity when a market dive or hot stock tugs at your emotions. Clients know there's a partnership between us, due diligence on what I recommend and the unvarnished truth about topics we discuss.
In my life, I strive for clarity and being present in the moment. Especially in my work, I see financial concerns keeping us from enjoying the present moment. I practice meditation and yoga and am currently studying to be a yoga instructor.
Before Edward Jones, I worked at a car rental company, starting as a car washer. I was promoted the day I asked to keep a damaged tire rim headed for the dumpster, explaining that I could have it fixed for $30 and sell it for $100. My manager recognized my entrepreneurial spirit and moved me to the front office. Then, as now, I used my creative thinking and determination to create success.
I'm an avid fan at my three teen boys' football games. We have a cottage at the lake for fishing, snowmobiling and other water activities. And my charity involvement is with KAIO, a nonprofit that works in India and other countries to teach poverty-stricken villagers a self-sustaining lifestyle for food and income.
