Retirement Savings Bonds

Retirement savings bonds (RSBs) combine the benefits of Zero Coupon Bonds and Provincial Bonds in a package to provide you with an enhanced level of income at a future date (payout date). The Principal amount you purchased is returned at maturity.

RSBs offer the following features:

  • Safety - The safety of these bonds depends on the underlying bond; if it is stripped from a Government or Provincial Bond, the federal or provincial government backs the interest and principal payments.
  • Income - You will receive income at the specified payout date, and then payments are paid twice a year.
  • Liquidity - You can sell a RSB at its market value on any business day which may be more or less than the original amount invested.
  • Minimum investment - $5,000.
