How Can I Protect Myself?

Spot scams quickly

Being able to spot a scam can save you time and money. We recommend being proactive so that if something does happen, you can stop it as quickly as possible.

Your finances

  • Review your Edward Jones accounts on a regular basis. You can do this anytime through Online Account Access.
  • If you are enrolled in Online Account Access and suspect that your information has been compromised, promptly change your Edward Jones user name and password. Do not sign on with your Social Insurance number.
  • Periodically inspect your credit report.
  • Never pay money in order to get money.
  • Never lend money or purchase with cash without getting a receipt.
  • Do not donate cash to a charity, and always ask for a donation receipt. Before you donate, visit GuideStar to confirm if a charity is legitimate.
  • Research a business before signing a contract or making a payment of any amount. (The Better Business Bureau is a good source of information.) Then pay the company only after services have been completed to your satisfaction.
  • Know before you buy: Check an online seller’s payment options and return policy.

Your personal information

  • Carry only necessary personal information with you, and do not share your Social Insurance number. 
  • Keep your computer security and anti-virus software up-to-date. 
  • Do not share confidential information over the Internet or telephone.

Other tips

  • Be wary of new “friends” who suddenly need money. 
  • Never give power of attorney to someone you don’t know well. 
  • Never sign a contract that includes blank lines.
