Daily market snapshot

Equities finished mixed on Monday, with the S&P 500 and NASDAQ finishing modestly higher, while the Dow shed 86 points. It was a rather quiet day in the headlines, but the release of the New York Fed survey on inflation showed that consumers' expectations for inflation over the next year rose to the highest level since the survey began, stoking worries over an inflation-induced shift in Fed policy. Weekly market wrap

It is not just the weather that's heating up as we enter the summer months. Inflation as measured by the consumer price index (CPI) rose 5.0% from a year ago, and the core index, which excludes food and energy, rose 3.8%, the largest 12-month increase since 19921. Easy comparisons, as prices collapsed last year during the height of the pandemic, continue to exaggerate the yearly increases. However, prices also rose strongly on a month-over-month basis. The core index increased 0.7% in May from April, above the 0.5% expected and more than three times the average monthly increase over the last five years1.
